Village Voices: French Country Life

In modern France, as in centuries past, village life revolves around the school, post office, shops and railway station, the centres where people meet to exchange news and to gossip. This is a visual distillation of village life in France today, where the traditions live on in the cafe that doubles as a charcuterie or in the small hotel (awarded no stars in the guide books) that provides for wedding receptions. We see the young adults who keep the village way of life viable and thriving. The text allows them to speak to use in their own words: the boulangere, who serves her many customers from a modern mobile bakery, the gendarme, who keeps a photograph of his wife and children inside his cap, and the incumbent mayor standing proudly in her office beside the bust of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic.

EDITORIAL :

As in so much of the Western world, mega-stores, malls and e-commerce have imposed a dulling sameness on a once-eclectic rural France. Happily, Marie-France Boyer has located villagers who have bucked conformity by simply not changing a thing. Populated by unfashionable shops, unstarred hotels and the people who run them, Village Voices is a celebration of an endangered way of life. -- USA Today, Jayne Clark, 10 December 1999

REVIEW :

The designs in the book came from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and a number of Latin American countries. It's a decent reference book is by no means extensive, the first half of the book contains individual drawings of tile designs (flat solid color designs) and most of the back of the book is the exact same designs just repeated as they would look on a wall. The CD rom is useful for making your own work from these designs. Cool book if you just need some designs from the period that you want to use directly. This is a fabulous 6"x6" book with cd-rom that will provide significant inspiration for artists in applique, polymer clay, ceramics, print and web design. A beautiful little book; it had the reference points I wanted for Nouveau, and the production vales are superb.. great book fast shipping. If you want flat tile designs from the period and some examples of them repea
